prayer wear

Tonight we had family night and talked about prayer. The girls have been learning about prayer in our kid’s program at church and we wanted to keep teaching the lessons at home. When it comes time to pray before bedtime with the girls, I find it hard to think of everything that we should pray for. I came up with an idea that I thought the girls would love to make to enhance their prayer life. We talked about 1 Thes. 5:16 “Pray continually.” We told them they could pray for things at any time-during the day, in school, while eating, in the bath, etc.
So we made prayer bracelets tonight with people’s names or things that they wanted to pray for.  My hope is that each night the girls will pick out a prayer bracelet from their prayer bucket and then we will pray for that. Then the next day, they get to wear the bracelet all day. I hope that other kids will ask them about their bracelets and they will tell them. I hope that whenever they look down at their bracelet that day they pray right there, right then.

this is for the little girls like keydy

As I am writing this, I am flooded with facebook statuses, e-mails, and blog posts of how to help Haiti.  My friend, JoAnna’s blog post particularly touched me (and Money Saving Mom) and this post is because of what I read.
For Christmas, we give three gifts to each of our children. One want, one need, and one gift for spiritual growth. This year the spiritual growth gift to our girls was sponsoring a little girl their age, named Keydy, from the Dominican Republic. We watched a DVD about where she lives and they understand she needs our prayers and financial support. Rilyn has already written to her and eagerly awaits a letter back in return!
Today, after reading JoAnna’s post, I took my girls aside and talked for the first time about the earthquake in Haiti. (I grew up in southern California and as a girl I experienced first hand major earthquakes and the fear that sets in as the ground shakes.)  I told my daughters how scared the kids are in Haiti and how they need our help.  How Haiti is very close to where Keydy lives and I showed them pictures of children who were hurt, stuck in rubble, and their crushed homes.  Then I told them about Cayden and Deacon, their friends from their Sunday school classes.  And their mom, Jamie, my friend from church.  Their adopted son, Amos, is still there and he needs our prayers and support.  The Iveys were featured on our local news and CNN today, and their story is touching.

So, today, I was challenged to give to Haiti in a real way that our girls understand.  Especially in this material country we live in where everything they could ever want is at their fingertips.  For Valentines Day for the past 2 years, we have given the girls tickets to the Sesame Street Live show.  Today, I talked with the girls about giving the money for our family’s tickets instead to Compassion, the organization we use to sponsor Keydy.  I’m not going to lie and say this was easy for Rilyn.  The first thing she asked was, (with tears in her eyes), “Are we going to be able to buy anything else again ever?”  We talked about shining the light of Jesus to our school, city, state, and world.  I told them that Jesus sometimes asks us to do hard things.  So, today, from our family, we donate $65 (the cost of all 5 tickets to SSL) to Compassion and ask that you would think creatively of something you can forego and donate to the children that so desparately need our prayers and support.

happy birthday jesus cake

We started a new tradition last year which was to eat birthday cake for breakfast on Chrismas morning for Jesus!  Last year’s cake was okay, but this year, I wanted to try even harder for more ‘meaning’.  After searching the internet, I came up with this creation:

couldn’t be a party without party horns!
blow out the candles!
Three layers of yummyness!

1st layer of cake = is brown for our sins.

2nd layer = is red for Jesus’ blood shed for our sins.

3rd layer = is green for life (ours if we confess with our mouth and believe with our heart that Jesus Christ is our Lord.)

Frosting is white = stands for Jesus’ purity & righteousness.

Gold Star in middle of cake top = star of Bethlehem = led wise men to Jesus. Star is 6 pointed =Star of David = Jewish nation in which Jesus is born.

Big Red candle in middle of star of David is Jesus.

We lit the red candle in the middle. Then each of us took our small candles and lit them from Jesus’ candle & carefully stuck  in the cake. Let our lights shine before men! Then we sang Happy Birthday to Jesus!!

don’t let things become kings

We had our “family night” last night and decided to focus on not letting “things” become more important than God.  As we started I told Rilyn and Ella that we were going to pretend we have to leave our house quickly.  We have only 5 minutes to gather up our favorite toys, books, stuffed animals.  Everything you are going to take must fit in your backpack.  When Ella walked in the room after the timer went off she told us, “I’m ready to go to heaven!” I’m pretty sure she really thought that is where we were going. So, after the time was up, we looked through each of their backpacks and discussed why they selected each item.

Rilyn’s backpack of precious ‘stuff’

Next, we read Matthew 19:23-24   Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

I held up a needle and explained.

eye of the needle

It is impossible for a camel to get through this hole in the needle!  Jesus is saying that it is impossible for a rich man to get to heaven. Why? Because when the rich man dies, he is no longer rich as the world defines rich, he can not take his stuff with him! The rich man and the poor man go to heaven with the same amount of material possessions-nothing!
(After this, Rilyn began crying because daddy told her she could not take her bear to heaven. Ella then began crying because daddy told her no blankie either!) Ahem- BUT you don’t need to be sad girls because there is even better things in heaven then bears and blankies! I can’t wait to go to heaven to find out!  To which Rilyn replied, “Is there even a gold kitchen?!?”  We’ll have to see…;-)

Alright, let’s put on your backpacks and get ready to play a game! You have to try and get through this tunnel with your backpack on without messing up the tunnel! (You obviously make the tunnel low enough so that they can not do this successfully.)

oops, can’t seem to go through this right!
Ella collapsed our tunnel with her backpack

So, in order for the kids to succeed, they will have to leave behind their backpacks full of stuff.

What a load off!

You then ask the kids how it felt to leave their things behind?
Rilyn said, “It was easy because then I knew I could get through the tunnel and not mess it up.”

Jesus talks a lot about money and things. He warns us not to love toys, our home, etc. more than God. (Give examples: not giving to the poor; reading all kinds of books, but not the Bible…)

In the first activity you had to pack your backpack. Is there anything in your backpack that reminds you of God? (Sadly, neither girls thought to pack their Bibles…sigh.)
In the second activity we had to crawl through a tunnel. What if our house had been on fire and we had to crawl out to get out safely? People who try to escape the fire and cling to things may not get out safely. Jesus’ story is about a man wanting to get to heaven. We need to be careful not to let “things” become more important than God.

the prayer box recipe

I thought I would share a great idea that I got from Focus on the Family.  We’ve been doing it for a year now on and off and just recently we have made if officially part of our Monday night bedtime routine with the girls.  They love it!  In order to teach them a great ‘recipe’ on how to pray, we use the ACTS model.  We put all the following items in a shoe box.

A-  Adoration:  Praise God for who He is.

-play money or coins:  God is our Provider (1 Tim. 6:17)

-Band Aids:  God is our healer (Psalm 103:3)

-wrapped Lifesaver candy:  He saves us (Matthew 1:21)

C-  Confession:  Repent of sin.

-Mr. Potato Head tongue:  teasing, arguing, lying (James 1:26)

-wooden spoon:  stirring up trouble (Proverbs 10:12)

-compact mirror: being selfish and having bad attitudes (Psalm 139:23-24)

T-  Thanksgiving:  Express gratitude.

-a popsicle stick cross:  for Jesus and salvation

-a pocket Bible:  for God’s Word

-a small photo album:  for friends and family

S-  Supplication:  make requests for others and myself.

-toy car:  for safety in travel

-little flashlight:  for God’s light to show the way

-a watch:  for spending time with family, friends, and Jesus.

On Monday nights, we take out our prayer box and we go through each item and talk about what they mean and then say a prayer after each ‘letter.’

these are the moments

Today was the first day that the good ‘ol wading pool came back out and I let the girls ‘swim’ in the backyard.  I had only two rules for the girls to follow:  No chalk in the pool and no sand in the pool.  They repeated the rules back to me and knew them.  I go back in the house and am pleasantly surprised how entertained they are and how much fun they are having.  I love watching them through the window when they think I’m not looking.  Awhile later I go back outside to find…dun Dun DUN…sand in the pool!  Rilyn immediately starts bawling when I asked who did it and she confesses that both her and Ella brought sand into the pool.  “Well, that’s it,” I said.  “No more pool for today.”  (Both girls are crying their eyes out now.)  You both broke the rule, and the consequence is no more pool/backyard for the rest of the day.  (You really would of thought I sentenced them to life in prison by the way they were crying-but this is how my girls are-DRAMATIC)  Then Rilyn, through her blurry eyes, looks up at me, ever so innocently, and asks if she is still going to heaven.

Wow.  I quickly say a little prayer for God to give me the words…

“Yes!  If Jesus is King of your life, nothing can separate you from Heaven.  Not the worst kind of sin you can think of.  And God wants to forgive our sins if we ask Him.”

I then explained to Rilyn and Ella that I sin everyday too, just like them.

“I think we should all ask God for forgiveness right now,” I said.

After our prayer and confession, I told the girls that God has now forgotten that they put sand in the pool!  Their sin is no more!  Rilyn then asked, “Does He still love me?”

“He will ALWAYS love you.  He gets disappointed in the wrong choices you make, but now He forgave you!”

“Where did our sins go?”

“Remember, when we went to the beach 2 weeks ago?  Our sins have been tossed in the deep part of the ocean.”

“Wow!” is all she could say.  And then they both wanted to cuddle.

Lord, let me be Jesus with skin on.

Hebrews 8:12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities,
and I will remember their sins no more.”

Micah 7:19 He will again have compassion on us;
he will tread our iniquities underfoot.
You will cast all oursins into the depths of the sea.

**Shock!  There are no pictures of the girls in the wading pool because I’m trying to cut back my picture-taking in May, (a little bit of a detox if you will), since I have over 250 pictures to scrapbook right now of Easter, Disneyland, and Asher’s birthday!

sounds sweet to my soul

As part of our bedtime routine for a month now, we have been reciting The Lord’s Prayer-Matthew 6:9-13. Rilyn picked it up very fast and began reciting it from memory a couple of weeks ago. It is so beautiful to hear your own child hide the Lord’s Word in her heart! Just a couple of days ago, while we were praying, Ella asked if she could say it by herself. “Sure sweetie. Give it a try.”

Wow! Ella being able to memorize this at the tender age of 3 makes me realize how much they do listen and remember everything we say (whether we like it or not!) I will always treasure the sweet sounds of my little daughter giving praise to the Lord in this video.

Matthew 6:9-13 (King James Version)

9 Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11Give us this day our daily bread.

12And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Sin

I was putting laundry away in my room this afternoon and as I was walking out, I thought I heard a crackling sound.  I knew Rilyn was asleep, but Ella could of been awake, so I tiptoed in the kitchen to see if that was her.  I grabbed my camera when I saw her (she didn’t see me) and I quietly whipped around the corner of the kitchen island where I saw this:

From December 2008

Oh yes, she took a candy cane off of the tree and was eating it ever so sneakily (or so she thought).  I love her ‘deer in the head lights’ look in this picture. She very quickly gave me the candy cane when I asked her “what are you doing?” and then confessed her sin to me.

stumped

Rilyn asked what a ‘Christian’ was because she heard the word on the radio in the car.

I told her that a ‘Christian’ was someone who wanted Jesus to be King of their life and they realized that they are a sinner and need Jesus to forgive their sins.

She then asked what a ‘sinner’ was.

I told her that ‘sin’ was any wrong choices and that we all are sinners. (She told me she wasn’t a sinner so I immediately knew this conversation wasn’t going to be ‘her coming to Christ’ moment.)

She wanted to know how I sin so I told her “one way mommy sins is when I get angry at you or daddy.”

She then asked me if Jesus was a sinner and I told her “No. Jesus is the only person who has never sinned.”

She then thought for a moment and said, “What about when Jesus tipped over the table in the temple (John 2:14-16)? He was angry then and you said being angry is a sin!”

I told her we will talk about this later with daddy.  How do you explain “righteous anger” to a 4 year old?

The pumpkin gospel

Just like us, all pumpkins are different. But there is something the same about every one of them – that yucky, slimy pulp on the inside!

From October 2008

The yucky, slimy pulp is like the sin that’s in us. Romans 3:23 says: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” That’s every single one of us.

From October 2008

So we clean out our pumpkin like the way Jesus cleans us out when we confess our sins.

God has made a way that all our sin can be forgiven and washed away. God even says He’ll cast them as far as the East is from the West. Romans 5:8 says: “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

After cleaning out the pumpkin, we give the pumpkin a new face! The Bible says God can make us a new creation too.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

From October 2008

Then comes the really special part. The light is placed inside the pumpkin and it glows for all to see!

2 Corinthians 4:6 says: “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.”

And Matthew 5:16 says: “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

So we can become like that pumpkin – a glorious sight for others to see the love of Jesus!
