Desiring God conference

James and I had the privilege of attending the national Desiring God conference last weekend in Minneapolis.  The theme was Act the Miracle.  We got to see and listen to many great Christian authors/speakers including  John Piper, Russell Moore, and the author of my favorite children’s Bible,  The Jesus Storybook Bible, Read-Aloud Edition: Every Story Whispers His Name,
Sally Lloyd-Jones.  By the way, she has  Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing , a new book for ages 6-9 that I recommend!  We are using it as dinner devotionals.  And she has a new version of the Christmas story for the younger crowd, Song of the Stars: A Christmas Story
.

downtown Minneapolis
John Piper

My favorite speaker was Sally Lloyd-Jones. (Probably because children’s ministry is where my heart is!) She has a beautiful British accent, and listening to her talk was mesmerizing. She asked us if we were protecting our children from life or EQUIPPING them? We need the darkness to show the light.

I thought about Rilyn, and how I watched her run the track two times at the end of cheer practice last week. I watched her (from my car in the parking lot) cry and gasp for breath on the track. When she got back to the car she went into the “It’s NOT FAIR! I didn’t do anything wrong at practice, it was the other girls who were not listening, and coach made us all run! I couldn’t even breath either it was so hot!”
It was hard to watch Rilyn suffer, but God gave me these words to speak to her at that time, “Rilyn, was it fair for Jesus, who was without sin, to suffer on the cross for all of OUR sins? He didn’t just suffer either, He died for our sins to be forgiven. Running the track because of other’s “sins” doesn’t seem like such a big deal now, does it? I know it’s hard, and it’s not fun to be out of breath. I am sorry, and I will pray for you to endure it well next time it happens. Because it WILL happen again. It might not look like running the track, but it will be something that feels not fair.  Next time you are suffering, you can think about how grateful you are that Jesus paid it all for you to be forgiven.”

How do we give them hope?  Take the focus off of them, and put it on God.  We don’t need a moral code, we need a Rescuer.

Ella and the Ags

Ella got to go to the Aggie game last night in which we WHOOPED SC State!!  70-14!!  What a fun game to go to since the tradition at A&M is to give a kiss when the Ags score.  Ella got LOTS of kisses from daddy!
Before the game in her new hat!

Grandpa and grandma went to the game with Ella and James, and they spoiled her with lots of Aggie love. She told me she had an “Aggie Spirit” flavored sno cone!

I thought they would want to leave the game early since it was a blow out, but Ella really wanted to walk on the field after the game!

knocked out!

Boys will be boys, and Asher proved that on Monday afternoon.

I was inside the house helping my girls with their homework, and Asher was in the backyard playing with a friend.  Unbeknownst to me, Asher was being naughty, and was playing on a backyard toy the wrong way.  He fell off, and must of landed mouth first on our cement patio.  He opens the back door crying, and blood was pouring from his mouth.  (I still have bloody fingerprints on my back door.)  Both my girls immediately start screaming, and I run to him, and lay him on the floor.  As I’m trying to assess the situation, (I know the mouth bleeds more than normal, so I’m trying not to freak out), I notice he is missing his top front tooth!!!!  Rilyn wants to call 911, and I tell her “no”.  So she asked to call daddy.  James said hearing that call from Rilyn flipped him out, because all he could hear was Rilyn screaming and mumbling, and he was wondering why I wasn’t calling him.  James then calls our neighbors, and the husband comes over to help me and have the girls walk over to their house.  I now don’t know if Asher swallowed his tooth, so I ask Rilyn to look for his tooth in the backyard and, praise the Lord, she found this:

Asher’s top front tooth, age 4 years 5 months

I called the emergency hotline at my pediatrician’s office, and thank goodness, they told me to call my dentist. (It’s hard to think clear in these situations!) It was 4:10, and my dentist office was about to close, (and they are 20 minutes away). I called, (in tears), and they said do not wash off the tooth, put his tooth in milk, and have him spit some of his saliva in the container. If I could get there right away, they might be able to save the tooth! (They said they have an hour time limit from the time the tooth comes out to put it back in.) My neighbor drove me right to the edge of the neighborhood when we saw James driving into the neighborhood!
We quickly jumped in James’ car, and took off! Asher fell asleep in the car, (probably from all the crying) and I was trying to keep him awake in fear he had a concussion. When we got to the dentist, (who stayed late for us), she had to put his mouth to sleep which meant a big long needle. I hate having to hold my son down while he is thrashing around in so much pain already. It’s the worst. And I could only pray, take his pain away. The dentist literally shoved his tooth back in and bonded it with two other teeth to stay in. It was a mess since his gums and lips were so torn up from the fall. We told Asher for being so strong and courageous at the dentist we would get him a new toy and ice cream. He was so traumatized from the whole afternoon though, that he just wanted to go home after the dentist. 😦
The dentist said he needs to eat only soft foods for 3 months!! We go back to the dentist in a week to see if the tooth bonded to the bone and praying no infections will incur this week from all the trauma. If the tooth doesn’t “take”, she will have to take it out, and put a fake tooth in to keep the spacing right in his mouth since he won’t be losing teeth at least for another year. We will also see if any teeth died, and if there will be any damage to his future permanent teeth.
For now, I am cutting up his soft food into little bites, and Asher asked me if he was a baby again. 🙂 Here is my little man, with the cutest fat lip I’ve ever seen! 😉

The girls have been super sweet to their little brother and showing much compassion. Ella proclaimed that Monday was the worst day of her life, and prayed that God would make her forget about the whole day. (It was pretty intense to see Asher bleeding like that.) Rilyn has written Asher sweet notes that I read to him, and a friend came over yesterday to deliver a card and a new car. His cousin is bringing him a smoothie today. He is feeling the love, and I’m thankful that the accident was what it was, and not more serious.

welcome to the SEC!

James and I got to attend the home opener Aggie game last weekend!  It was the first game being in the SEC, and it was fun because ESPN College GameDay was there!  Although we lost to Florida, it was a GREAT first half and just being in Kyle Field is electric!

Can you see the College GameDay guys filming?

fighter verses!

In order for us to be intentional about our kids memorizing Scripture this year, James and I have sat down and made a plan through December.  During carpool to school each morning, (approx. 8 minutes), we use this time to have our girls memorize Scripture.  For 3 years now, they have memorized over 50 verses.  After we made the plan, I thought, why not post it on my blog so others can follow along too, or ask me about it to make sure we are keeping up!
For starters, we downloaded the fighter verse app here:  http://fighterverses.com/store/
We will be memorizing 7 passages through December.  All of these verses have songs with them.   (“Every Fighter Verse™ Songs CD includes word-for-word Bible passages (English Standard Version) set to music.”)  See here to listen to all the songs.  Some are pretty catchy!  I’m going to listen to them in my car often so I can memorize the Scriptures right along with them!  Most of the verses that I remember from childhood are because I learned them in a song!  I know from experience how powerful songs can be to help memorize!
Weeks 1 and 2:  Deut. 10:12-13
Weeks 3 and 4:  Psalm 86:5-7
Week 5 and 6:  James 1:2-5
Weeks 7 :  Romans 1:16
Weeks 8 and 9:  2 Corinthians 12:9
Weeks 11 and 12:  Isaiah 40:28-31
Weeks 13 and 14:  Psalm 141:3-4
Weeks 15:  review
Incentives:
Main Event in December!

Parents keep track of their child’s knowledge of the verses.  There are 3 types of quizzes on the Fighter Verse app:

  1. Quick Blanks Quiz—recite the verse in your head and tap to reveal one word at a time
  2. Word Bank Quiz—select the missing word from a word bank
  3. Typing Quiz—type in the missing words

These quizzes will help them practice the verses throughout the week!  I am thinking of adding a “quiz” to their homework each night.)

Each child earns 6 tokens (approx. $1.50) at Main Event for every verse they know.  The child can earn up to 42 game tokens by the end of week 14.  The kicker is that on the day before or day of “Main Event day” in December, for every verse they can say from the semester, they can earn another 6 tokens (hence the importance of week 15!)  So each child can earn maximum 84 tokens!
Kids at any age can memorize Scripture!  It’s all about the parents being intentional!  The video below is Rilyn 2 years ago at age 6.

back to school 2012!

It’s a big day for mommy!  Back to school!!!!  This year will be different in that Asher is going to preschool everyday half day and at the same school as the girls.  He goes in the afternoon, so that means everyday, from 11-3 I have kid-free.  Wow!!!  I haven’t wrapped my head around this new freedom yet since today was day 1, and I, of course, was busy editing back to school pictures!  🙂   Who knows what I’ll do tomorrow afternoon!
My kids, so excited about the first day, were up and dressed at 5:45 this morning! I mistakenly started doing pictures too early, and so some of these pictures are before the sun was up, which I’m not a fan of. Oh well, it’s realistic I guess. Back to getting up soooo early! 😦

I had a little fun in photoshop!  Ella is holding a picture of her first day of prek 2009
Rilyn is holding a picture of her first day of kindergarten

My third grader!

I have them write their own name on one side of the chalk speech bubble so I can remember their signature each year!

Here is Ella and her best friend, Anna. Matching “first day of school outfits” since 2008!

our new “gymnasts!”

Ella and her first grade teacher!

she was Rilyn’s teacher too, so you know I love her!

Rilyn actually has three teachers: reading, math, and science. This is her homeroom/math teacher!

He’s an Aggie!!!!!!!! (this is very important to Rilyn!)

Asher’s turn!

his third and final year of preK…

Asher, and his best friend, Caden. These two will rule the school in no time! (back to school matching shirts since 2010)

we’re tough!
we’re strong!

The first thing the afternoon preschoolers do is march to the cafeteria where they eat lunch with all the big kids. It was so cute to watch them!

Asher discovering his pb&j!

Having two older sisters means getting to ride the school bus home with them! He’s been watching this bus drop off his sisters for his whole life…finally HE is on it!!

my kids getting off

Acting like he is all cool getting off the bus for the first time.

I’m a bus rider pro

I wanted to have a special snack for the kids when they got home, so I baked homemade chocolate chip cookies and cut them in the shape of their new grade level! It was a hit!

3rd grade!

Ella did complain that because she had a “1”, she got the least amount of cookie. We had to have a talk about being thankful!

“Next year mommy, I will have a BIG “2” cookie!!”

Asher got a “P” for preschool!

YUMMY!

The kids all had GREAT days of school with no complaints! Thank you Lord!

somebody’s daddy is a pastor!

After taking Ella, my 6 year old, out on a back to school date, she told me, “Mom, you’re my best girl!  Well, actually, there is one girl I love more than you.”

“oh ya, who is that?” I said, really not knowing who she would say.

“God’s queen!”  she shouted.

My eyebrows definitely raised at that one, and I said, “Who is God’s queen?!?”

“Mom, you know, the church!!”

“Oh, you mean Christ’s bride, the church?”

“Yes, His bride!  I love her more than you, but that’s the only girl I love more.”

Somebody’s daddy is a pastor (of finance-but still)!  😉

DR trip-day 8

Friday was beach day for the group at Caberete!  But for us, more importantly, we were meeting our girl that we sponsor through Compassion!  We started sponsoring Darianny two years ago, and purposely chose her because she was from the Dominican Republic, and in between Rilyn and Ella’s ages.  We knew that one day, we wanted to go on a family mission trip through our church to the DR, and then, maybe we would be able to meet her!  It was hard to believe that nearly two years later, our decision was coming to fruition!  I contacted Compassion 2 months prior to our visit to set up the arrangements, and Darianny was driven 3 hours from her village to Caberete, a resort beach, on Friday morning.    This is the photo we prayed over/stared at on our fridge for the past 2 years:

And this is Darianny meeting Rilyn and Ella Friday morning:

big smiles!

After talking with Darianny, through the translator Compassion gave us, we learned that she wants to be a fashion model when she grows up! She was very excited when one of the gifts we brought her was some stylish new sunglasses! Look at her strutting her stuff!

future model!

This was Darianny’s first time at the beach, and the first time out of her village! The joy on her face never left all day!

joy

She LOVED the ocean! She never wanted to get out!

me and my girls!
Darianny asked how salt got into the ocean  🙂

After a yummy lunch of pizza, we took the girls to a bead shop where they each got to make a necklace! We learned that this was Darianny’s first time in a gift shop too!

new handmade necklaces!

We got ice cream afterwards of course!

Darianny got watermelon flavor ice cream!

What a special experience to meet her! It was the perfect ending to our trip! We hope that when we come back in a few years that we can visit Darianny again, this time in her village!

goodbye hugs

The last hour we had at the beach after Darianny left was spent relaxing and soaking in the sun!

Thanks Dominican for the life changing memories!

“If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”      1 John 3:17-18
Thank you to Makarios, to all our friends and family who generously donated money to our trip, and those who donated supplies for the students of Makarios so they can receive new clothes, shoes, underwear, and school supplies on their first day of school in September!  God bless you all!
